The Language, Literacy and Numeracy Program (LLNP)

The Language, Literacy, and Numeracy Program are very essential in today’s lives because it seeks to improve participant’s language, literacy, and numeracy skills. They are link to every individual’s physical, social and economic security. Enhancing student’s literacy and numeracy skills help them to ensure that they are well- prepared for their study and their future career. The LLN program objective is to provide language, literacy and numeracy assistance to job seekers who, due to low levels of these skills may experience significant disadvantage in finding and sustaining employment. Through improving these skills they can participate more effectively in the labour workforce, gain sustainable employment and providing greater gains for society in the long term. Many people like migrants and international students come to Australia with low level of English, the result of this is they cannot find job easily because majority of the job requires basic skills such as communication skills where you need to have the language literacy. The LLNP reduce barriers for job seekers to employment.

Contracted Registered Training Organisations including community organisations, private providers, and universities are the ones who will deliver the program including English Language, literacy, and numeracy. Following a Pre-Training Assessment (PTA) which determines the job seekers LLN competences levels, learners are placed in the appropriate stream of learning which can be either:

  • Initial Language stream – solely for learners whose first language is not English and who at the time of the PTA, achieve Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF) level 1 or below in all ACSF reading and oral communication indicators
  • Basic Language, Literacy and Numeracy Stream – focused on consolidating functional LLN skills
  • Advanced Language, Literacy, and Numeracy stream – for learners who, at the time of the PTA, generally achieve between ACSF level 3 and 5 in reading, writing and oral communication

Furthermore, The key benefits of Language, Literacy and Numeracy Program is through this program we can assess students English levels and improved ability to assess learner's literacy and numeracy skills, and sustained commitment in mentoring/sharing of teaching experiences to improve instruction and outcomes which all allow them to serve the learners more effectively and efficiently.

I strongly urge the members of the community to support the early language, literacy, and numeracy program for the benefits that it provides the students, the trainers/teachers, and the community itself. We owe it to ourselves to improve the skills of our learners and teachers, and by doing so, improve our nation. There is no better time to start than today.

In line with that, As an international student,  LLN is one of the requirements if you are enrolling in courses that need high level of English literacy. Overcome Language Barrier and Be a Successful English Learner in Australia

Pursuing your dream to study abroad is nothing much more exciting being a student, it is a learning experience that is truly fulfilling. However challenges are always there, language barrier is one of them. Especially for the students who took courses like 22253VIC Certificate III in EAL (Access), it is designed for participants who have little or no prior educational experience or whose circumstances have resulted in disrupted education and who need to develop initial level Basic English speaking, listening, reading and writing, numeracy and learning skills. Students who take up this kind of courses are the ones who mostly experience this kind of challenges when studying in other countries.

Learning English takes a great deal of time and effort. Hard work, commitment and determination are the key for you to succeed. Here are some things that to keep in mind that could help you reach fluency in English language and break those barriers. As what Niel Armstrong once said “research is creating new knowledge”, you have to spend some time to research about the language of the country you wish to study. Learn about their expressions, idioms and slang before you leave your home country. You have to take action to break down the barrier, having the courage to communicate is one of the most effective ways in it. When you are already in the country you have to be out of your comfort zone and explore the areas that helps you improve your English skills, you can join campus clubs and participate in every school activities. Learning English is not easy as it is, it’s alright to make mistakes, just learn from it so you will improve. It doesn’t matter if you can’t speak English perfectly as long as you can keep the conversation going. Asking people to correct you whenever possible is also a good thing.

Seeking clarification whenever you don’t understand something also works. Ask question rather than smiling shyly or nodding for you to make sure you get the correct information. Using your first language is not necessary, all you need is to immerse yourself in the language by communicating to your group of English learners using English language it will help the both of you improve your skill. Reading and watching English books and movies will also help. A successful English learner should maintain some habits to help them enhance their skills. They should make a study time schedule, organize your time and put dedication in studying English. You have to do it on regular basis because reaching the high proficiency in English doesn’t happen overnight. Be physically and mentally ready, it will be easier and effective in that way. Studying English Language should not be a burden, make fun while learning, you can listen to English songs or watch movies. Understand the meaning and practice using those words. You can make a note of what you learn each day and see which areas need improvement. Always ensure that you spend enough time studying all the area of language learning, the reading, writing, speaking, listening, vocabulary and grammar.
